Being a welcoming and engaging place to learn and work is deeply embedded in EMS. But we don’t always know what to do if we witness someone experiencing problematic or intimidating behavior. Join us to explore how stereotypes shape expectations in STEM and beyond through an interactive activity. Together, we will examine how these norms influence bias and contribute to exclusion in science, engineering, and industry. From there, we’ll discuss real-world examples of these challenges in EMS fields and introduce bystander intervention strategies to foster equity and inclusion. Be part of creating a more inclusive environment at Penn State, EMS and in the earth sciences, engineering, and energy sectors.
There will be two Bystander Intervention programs offered during the fall of 2025.
- Faculty/Staff/Postdoc Session - Wednesday, October 15, from 1:30 - 3 p.m. on Zoom
- Undergraduate/Graduate Student Session - Tuesday, October 21, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in 116A Community Room in Deike (114 in EMS library if extra space is needed)
This program is sponsored by the EMS Diversity Council, We Are For Science (WAFS) Fellows, the Graduate Engagement Network, EMS Educational Equity and the EMS Staff Advisory Council. It is facilitated by Sophia Mills, Program Coordinator for Outreach and Prevention, R-VOICE Center.
Participation counts as professional development toward staff EMS performance goals, and as faculty professional development.
