As a student in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, you have multiple options for requesting academic advising assistance. You can work with your assigned adviser (often a faculty member in your current or intended major), advising staff in each department, or general advisers in the Ryan Family Student Center.
All students in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences are assigned to an academic adviser. Often, this adviser is a faculty or staff member in the students major or intended major.
In addition to an assigned adviser, students also have access to general advisers in the Ryan Family Student Center (14 Deike Building). Assigned advisers are more connected to specific programs and are best prepared to help students make decisions in course selection for major requirements, approve substitutions, and make post graduation plans.
Advisers in the Ryan Family Student Center can assist in understanding university policies and procedures, general education selections and substitutions, change of major, adding minors, issues around academic difficulty, and study abroad plans.
Academic Advisers in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences are available for advising. General advisers are available to discuss change of major into the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, general education choices and substitutions, academic difficulty, and other quick advising questions.
Please check with your assigned adviser for current appointment options.
"Drop-in” appointments are available in the Ryan Family Student Center (RFSC) in 14 Deike on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1:30-4:00 p.m. and on Thursdays from 9:00-11:30 a.m.
Students can also schedule academic advising appointments with a general adviser in the RFSC by calling 814-863-2751 or talking to the staff in the RFSC. All appointments will be scheduled in Starfish and take place either in-person or through Zoom. A calendar invitation will be sent to your Penn State email address from Starfish Calendar with the appointment details. If Zoom is the chosen meeting location, details on how to connect to Zoom for your scheduled appointment will be included in the Starfish Calendar invitation. Please connect with the adviser using computer audio or phone at the URL or phone number provided.
Note: These are the standard hours for the RFSC. Any temporary changes will be announced and can be found in Canvas (under EMS Undergraduate Canvas) and the weekly undergraduate newsletter.
