Five Questions
What made you choose your major?
Ever since I was young, I have had a strong interest and passion for the weather. By the time I entered high school, I was confident that I wanted to pursue a career related to atmospheric science. After learning about all the opportunities in Penn State’s Meteorology and Atmospheric Science major (classes, different options within the major, clubs and organizations, well-known faculty, internships, support in the college, etc), I knew that it was what I wanted to pursue.
What student organizations and activities are you involved in?
I am the Head of Information Technology and a forecasting shift leader for the Campus Weather Service. I maintain our website and make necessary changes or upgrades, lead weekly forecasting shifts, and assist in all the organization’s plans and events. Additionally, I am the President of the Storm Chase Team at Penn State, and I am a Social Media Chair for EMS Student Council. I am also involved in the PSU Branch of the American Meteorological Society, EMSAGE, and more.
What is the one Penn State activity that everyone should participate in, and why?
TEEMS (Total Engagement in Earth and Mineral Sciences). My choice to attend TEEMS as an incoming student in EMS was one of the best decisions that I have made at Penn State. I was able to meet dozens of other students prior to classes and make friends in a more informal setting. I also connected with several faculty and alumni that introduced many of the opportunities and experiences that EMS has to offer. This was all while enjoying all the fun activities at Lake Raystown, such as playing sports, going to a waterpark, going bowling, campfires, karaoke, and much more. This past summer (as an incoming junior), I attended TEEMS again as a mentor and enjoyed it just as much. I highly recommend incoming EMS students attend TEEMS!
What is one piece of advice you would give to prospective students?
Take advantage of everything that the college has to offer during your time here. There are so many incredible opportunities that the college may offer or know about that you may never encounter again. Network with people, create connections, apply for that internship, join that club that interests you. You never know when one decision to do something could lead to another opportunity that propels your life and career forward!
What opportunities has Penn State provided for you so far?
One of my favorite opportunities was attending the GREEN Program trip to southern Iceland over spring break in 2023 through our embedded study abroad program course (EMSC 299). We traveled to many power plants and conservation facilities to learn about the country’s efforts to use renewable energy while also conserving natural resources and the environment. We also visited many natural landmarks to enjoy the beauty of the country, while also understanding climate change’s effects on the country. Other opportunities include EMEX, TEEMS, and the NOAA William M. Lapenta Internship Program (not directly through PSU but the support in EMS helped me get the internship).
