What made you choose your major?
I chose my materials science and engineering major out of my passion for physical chemistry and nanotechnology. In order to drive innovation, breakthroughs in the materials we use need to be actualized, and the field of MatSE is a leader in yielding these cutting-edge advancements.
What student organizations and activities are you involved in?
Currently, I serve as an EMS Ambassador striving to help incoming / current families and students and am the Undergraduate Representative in the EMS’s Diversity Council working towards improving diversity in the college. I am also involved as a member of the Penn State Materials Advantage Chapter and a member of the Minorities in Earth and Mineral Science club.
What is the one Penn State activity that everyone should participate in, and why?
Besides from THON, I think an activity everyone should participate in is intramural (IM) sports. There is an IM sport for almost everything at Penn State, ranging from Harry Potter Quidditch teams to canoe on canoe Battleship. Not only are IM sports a great way to stay in shape and have a good time with friends, but it also lets you meet new people outside your own friend group who share similar interests as yourself and expand your circle!
What is one piece of advice you would give to prospective students?
My biggest piece of advice to prospective students would be to put in the work beforehand and create a plan towards the goals you want to achieve during your time here at Penn State. Nothing gets handed to you, you will achieve what you set out to achieve – so defining your goals and planning the steps you need to achieve them will help drive you towards success!
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in college so far?
Its never too early. It’s never too early to apply for an internship, to start networking at career fairs or related events, to ask a professor to do research with them or to be a teaching assistant. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want or limit yourself in any capacity, and good things will come your way!
