As a first-year student, Mensch was confident that she wanted to advocate for a cause. She decided to attend the night-time Luminaria Ceremony at Relay For Life. At the ceremony, luminaria bags line the walkways lit with candles, honoring those who have suffered or are suffering from cancer. She had her "this is it" moment and decided to get involved. Gradually, she assumed more leadership and held positions like the EMS Relay For Life chairperson, Greek recruitment overall, ultimately becoming the executive director in her senior year.

Students can learn about minerals, crystals, gems, fossils and Earth sciences at the annual Minerals Junior Education Day. The educational program, co-sponsored by Penn State's College of Earth and Minerals Sciences' Museum and Art Gallery, is designed to encourage the interest of students in grades one through eight in the Earth sciences.

When she was 7 years old, Trinidad and Tobago native Safiya Alpheus searched for fossils in her backyard, starting her passion for geology, which solidified in high school. Her love of rocks led her to Penn State to study geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

When five students met at a first-year student orientation, they did not know their friendships would build through college and positively impact the community. Dan Cooley, Cole Ensminger, Steven Langballe, Peter Scalia and Shannon Stellato began their journey as members of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Student Council Benefiting THON (EMS THON) and emerged as leaders to support fundraising to fight cancer.
