Do you have questions about how a degree from the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences will help you achieve your career goals and aspirations? Do you have questions about what students in our programs do after graduation? To help answer those questions, we asked a few students from our class of 2021 what their plans are for after graduation.
Note: You can view the after graduation plans of our previous classes of graduates using the links at the bottom of the page.
I will be starting my Ph.D. in volcanology at Rutgers University. My research will focus on how large igneous provinces interact with global climate, specifically understanding how volatiles are mobilized, stored and released in volcanic systems, and how emissions drive environmental and climatic change over geological time.
Camila Baumer
Geography
I'll be attending graduate school! I'm staying right here at Penn State to further my studies in geography through the department's 5-year Ph.D. with M.S. degree program.
Danielle Dedeaux
Geography
I’ll be staying at Penn State for two more years to get a master’s degree in Geosciences. I’ll be working with Andy Smye and Don fisher to look at subduction processes in Japan. Through my undergraduate thesis I was able to realize that research is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing, and I’m really excited to take another step forwards in that regard.
Evan Jakovac
Geosciences
I will use my degree in environmental systems engineering from Penn State and my Engineering in Training (EIT) license from NCEES. I am looking forward to beginning a new chapter in my life and hope to become a professional engineer in a few years! Thank you to the College of EMS and the EME department for all the endless support and opportunities!
Jaclyn Rawa
Environmental Systems Engineering
I'll be pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of California - Santa Barbara in the Materials department under Dr. Jeff Sakamoto. Looking ahead to the future, I'll be helping the UC system and California establish a battery lab meant to train workers and scientists on battery science! ⠀
Julia Chen
Materials Science and Engineering
I plan to research how the public perception of weather and climate information affects the way people interact with jeopardized coastal spaces. I'm staying at Penn State because I'm enrolled in the IUG 4+1 undergraduate/master's program.
Julia Li
Meteorology and Atmospheric Science
I'm attending Colorado State University to pursue an M.S. and Ph.D. in atmospheric science. I will be joining the Mesoscale and Climate Group under Dr. Kristen Rasmussen to work research related to the NASA INvestigation of Convective UpdraftS (INCUS) satellite mission. I am extremely excited to utilize the knowledge I have gained at Penn State and further my passion for researching high-impact weather events!"
Justin Hassel
Meteorology and Atmospheric Science
I'm joining Trinity Consultants as an associate consultant. There, I'll be working with air dispersion modeling, air emissions, permit applications and more. The College of EMS has prepared me for this role, and I am going to miss it!
Katie Seidel
Environmental Systems Engineering
I plan to use my degree and my minor in planetary science and astronomy from the Eberly College of Science to land a job in the aerospace industry, with a focus on human space exploration.
Lindsay Leber
Geosciences
I'm attending New Jersey Institute of Technology in the Applied Physics Ph.D. program. I'm joining their high energy solar physics group under Bin Chen and is interested in energetic particle transport and acceleration stemming from solar transient events (like flares).
Mallory Wickline
meteorology and atmospheric science and planetary science & astronomy
I'm searching for an opportunity with the State of Colorado or City of Denver. My goal is to get into either the Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency with the City of Denver or the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment.
Maya Berry
energy and sustainability policy
I plan on continuing on to earn a master's degree and Ph.D. in entomology and ultimately pursue a career in research and public outreach with natural history collections. I'll be around Penn State for another year or so to continue my research in entomology and paleobotany."
Parker Przybylski
Geosciences
I'm excited to kick off my career as a graduate geoscientist with DUG Geosolutions in Kuala Lumpur! DUG is an Australian-based company that specializes in geoscience services and high-performance computing, with offices around the world including London, Houston, and Abu Dhabi. I’m looking forward to learning more about seismic processing and making a real impact in the industry.
Rahil Mohd Zaid
Geosciences
I plan on continuing my studies by pursuing a master's degree in geography & environment at George Washington University. I wish to gain the knowledge and experience to work in urban development at the local or federal government level during my time in our nation's capital.
Raven Henager
Geography
I will be working as a reservoir engineer at Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. I will be part of the Reservoir Management Department, where we manage wells throughout their entire life cycle and find ways to optimize our production efficiency. I'm eager to apply the enormous lessons I learned and the skills I gained from my time at Penn State to excel in my future job.
Shahad Alsadoon
petroleum and natural gas engineering
I'm heading to the University of Virginia to earn a Ph.D. researching periods of rivers on Mars. My research will be focusing on how boundary conditions impact fluvial systems on a once-wet Mars, as well as what stratigraphic features can tell us about the types of rivers that were on Mars.
