The EMS Graduate Student Council (GSC) is the representative body for graduate students in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State. The Council is composed of graduate student representatives from each of the College’s five departments and serves as a vital link between graduate students, college leadership, and the broader EMS community.
The GSC advocates for the interests of EMS graduate students as a whole, facilitates the development and implementation of policies that support graduate education, and fosters collaboration across departments. Through regular meetings, dialogue with college leadership, and student-driven initiatives, the Council works to enhance the academic, professional, and social experience of EMS graduate students.

How do I become a member?
Each EMS department selects its own graduate student representatives. Please contact your department directly to learn about its selection process.
Can I hold an office?
The Council elects officers annually, including Chair, Co-Chair, and Secretary. Officers are elected by Council members at the beginning of the academic year. Details on roles and elections are outlined in the Graduate Student Council Constitution.

How often does the Council meet?
The GSC meets at least monthly during the fall and spring semesters, with additional meetings scheduled as needed. All reasonable attempts will be made to facilitate the council members schedules.
