EMS Doctoral Programs Ranked Amongst Best in Country
September 28, 2010 - The National Research Council today released its assessment of U.S. doctoral programs, which includes data on over 5,000 programs in 62 fields at 212 universities nationwide.  The assessment is designed to help universities evaluate and improve the quality of their programs and to provide prospective student with information on the nation's doctoral programs.   [

Meteorology

Elements of all five academic departments in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences are ranked in the top ten nationally. In fact, U.S. News and World Report ranks Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences eighth in the nation.  Note that the rankings listed below reflect the most current data available.

Energy and Mineral Engineering

Meteorology
Although meteorology and atmospheric science programs across the United States are not officially ranked, Penn State Meteorology has a strong reputation for being a leader in academics and research at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The Department of Meteorology at Penn State is one of the oldest and largest in the nation, is able to attract a large number of students from out-of-state, and has the largest completely student-run Campus Weather Service in the United States.

Other Rankings
Released in January 2007, National Science Foundation ranked Penn State 1st in funded materials research in the country for FY2005.

Science Watch ranked Penn State faculty 7th on the highest number of published peer-reviewed papers on materials and their impact, 1997-2001.

In 2007, Penn State ranks 2nd in the world by Thomson Scientific in number of scholarly citations related to global environmental change, with the majority accounted for by faculty from the College of EMS.
