E-Mail Analysis

·         E-mail analysis

o   What information does the sender intend for you to get?

§  Explicitly stated?

§  Expected to be read between the lines?

§  Misstated, but you should have figured it out anyway?

§  Deep background information that the message should trigger you to remember?

o   What response does the sender want?

§  Acknowledgment of message received

§  Questions concerning uncertainties in the message

§  List (with timeline) of actions to be taken in response to the message

§  Updates when tasks are completed.  This can sometimes be consolidated into one message sent after all of your assigned tasks are completed, but only if no one else is waiting on your completion of a task before they can start one.

o   The overarching principle here is that the e-mail sender should know, at any given time, what you are doing in response to their message.
