Frequently Asked Questions (Click on any question for an answer)

How is this online course (EGEE 102) different from regular in-class course?

In a regular class (face-to-face) I , as an instructor, facilitate your learning in the classroom. You attend the lectures and participate in class activities and ask questions. You are assigned home activities (home work), quizzes from time to time. You need to take mid term exams and a final exam (most of the time in class).

In this online course, you do not have to attend any classes and all the instructional material (10 lessons) is presented online. These materials include some text, graphics, videos, or electronic whiteboard discussions of numerical problems, graphics with audio explanations (click on the left side menu to see samples). You will be assigned a lesson and are given usually a week or two depending on the topic and/or length of the lesson. You have read the text do the online activities such as drag and drop or fill in the blanks or mouse over and answer some questions. At the end of the lesson you will have a puzzle to complete and some practice questions for checking the progress. These WILL NOT be counted for grade. They are just for your practice. After that you take a quiz for grade. While you are doing these lessons, you need to discuss about these issues on an electronic message board. This electronic discussion is between classmates and the instructor. Once the lesson and quiz for grade are over you will be assigned second lesson.

Do we have to be on campus to take this course or exams?

NO. This course is online . All the instruction material will be delivered to you online. All quizzes, Home Activities, final exam, and project are all online. These are all custom-designed (student-specific) for each student. If you are a UP campus student you need to come to an assigned class room in the evening hours for taking computer based mid term exams. You can sign up for a time slot that is convenient suring the exam week . You do NOT have to come to campus or be on University Park Campus if you are doing an internship or away from UP campus or if your schedule does not have any resident instruction class. You can be working or doing an internship or go on a long vacation and still do it.

Because this is an online course do I have the flexibility of finishing at own my pace?

Yes and NO. You have flexibility to open and read the material any time during the week. You can play the animations any number of times you want and wherever you have an internet connection during a given week. However, at the end of each lesson (mostly every week) you have to take a quiz for grade. This has to be finished by a certain date (deadline). So you have flexibility to study at any time during the day or night but not so much that you can do the course for a week and take a break for two and then resume again.

If I have a difficulty or do not follow something online or if I have a question on a concept what can I do?

Just because you are an online student does not mean that you cannot make use of my office hours or phone contact etc. You can always contact me in person at a mutually convenient time or call me on my phone or even cell phone. The TAs will also available to help in person if you like or electronically if you cannot make it to the office on campus.

How is this course graded? What is involved?

This course is graded on an individual achievement. You have to finish ten lessons at a scheduled pace, take quizzes, finish the home activities, mid-term exams and the final exam just like in class students. The following is the distribution.

Home Activities (Homework)

A total of three activities must be performed out of four for a grade of 20%.

Mid-Term Exams

Two out of three mid term exams are required and count for 30% of the grade (15% each). If you take all three exams, lowest grade will be dropped.

Quizzes:

There will be 10 on-line quizzes. You can log on (only once) to finish quizzes online.  Only eight out of ten will be counted for grade.
NO make up quizzes will be given under any circumstances.

Final Exam

This is a mandatory and comprehensive exam with all multiple choice questions. Questions will be from the practice questions and/or previous exams. Final exam can be taken from anywhere during the finals week. You do not need to be on campus.

Project

There will be one project. The project will be presented to the class mates using a web page.

I have already taken EGEE 101 can I still take EGEE 102? Will it count for my GN credits?

Yes. You can take either one or both in any order you like. Both will count for 3 GN credits each.
