Student Involvement in Learning
Students will be actively involved in learning through classwork in teams, team projects on refinery processes, an presentation of team projects

The rules of Academic Integrity apply to all class activities.
* Quizzes will be open-note
and open-book and challenge the students to think and synthesize the
material learned.
* There will be 4
unannounced quizzes that will cover the material reviewed in class and
the reading assignments.
* Make-up quizzes will be
given for excused absences as defined by the University Policy.
* Quiz or exam grade for
unexcused
absences is zero.
Four homework assignments will be given to solve problems. Group work is encouraged, but submission of an assignment copied from someone else's work will not be tolerated.
The project report should contain a process unit design or simulation that includes a complete material balance and important properties of the product streams. ProPlan, HYSYS, or any other software can be used for unit design, or refinery simulations. Results from the designs or simulations must be explained and discussed, considering the specific goals of petroleum refining. Each group member will be asked to provide a confidential participation grade for all the other members in the group. These grades will be taken into consideration in assigning the final grade for the group project. Individual grades of students in the same group can, therefore, be different, depending on the participation of an individual in the group project, as judged by the other members in the group.
Open-book,
open-note, in-class exam to review refining concepts and solve problems.
Open-book, open-note, except for one section. Comprehensive to
test a proper sythesis of course materials for meaningful learning.
Team
work in class to solve problems and share the solutions in class.
There will be three, or four classwork assignments. Participation
includes
asking questions, or answering the questions we ask during class, or on online discussion boards.
Up to 5% extra credit depending on effort and accuracy.
