Each year, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences selects an advanced student with truly outstanding scholarship as the Dean Steidle Memorial Scholar. To be eligible, a student must be a graduating senior who plans to attend graduate school.
While the selection process typically emphasizes exceptional performance in coursework, other factors that could be used to distinguish a candidate (such as research accomplishments, unusual creativity of a scholarly nature, powerful and unique intellectual breadth or special scholarly accomplishments under adverse circumstances) also can be important selection criteria. The student should highlight these factors and their future plans in a 1-2 page, single-spaced statement. A letter of recommendation from one faculty member is required.
