Volatile Collection Cylinders
These cylinders are used to collect headspace volatile organic compounds that are emitted from plants as they are fed upon by insect herbivores. Insects induce defensive signaling pathways in plants that cause the release of these airborne chemicals as a means to attract natural enemies such as ladybugs or parasitic wasps. Purified air is pumped into the chamber as plant volatile laden air is removed by vacuum pressure. The outgoing air passes through a chemical absorbent filter cartridge which can then be analyzed via gas chromatography. The collection apparatus is constructed of glass, teflon and aluminum to reduce contamination by non-inert surfaces.
