TOTEMS

Image for TOTEMSTotal Orientation to Earth and Mineral Sciences is a summer program for first-year students in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The adventure begins with EMS faculty, staff and current students helping first-year students and their parents move into their dorm room early. The College provides a well-earned lunch for the student and their families. That afternoon the students say goodbye to their families and board a bus to Lake Raystown, a resort area approximately one hour from campus. Students spend the next three days:

  1. learning how to work in teams
  2. enjoying lake activities
  3. participating in cabin cooking challenges
  4. creative problem solving
  5. meeting fellow students (making friends even before classes begin); getting to know some of the current students, faculty and alumni (networking with successful alums begins before students enter the classroom)

Students will need casual clothes, toiletries, towels (bed linens are provided), swimsuit, bug spray, sun block and sneakers. Students do NOT need to bring a sleeping bag. The college will provide food, accommodations, transportation, and the cost of any activities at Lake Raystown, with only a $100 fee to help defray the cost of the lodging.
