CECG Summer Fellowship Program
The CECG, Center for Environmental Chemistry and Geochemistry, annually awards funding to Penn State undergraduates or graduate students to pursue work on research topics related to environ-mental chemistry during summer sessions. Students can apply in research areas ranging from the biological sciences and engineering to geochemistry. CECG funds proposals with a 50% matching component. Students submitting winning proposals receive $1500 from CECG, to be paid via wage payroll, and a host faculty member provides at least that amount from other sources. Students are selected on the basis of intellectual promise, academic record, and faculty recommendations. Recipients of the 2009 Summer Fellowships include:

SROP –Summer Research Opportunity Program
SROP is a gateway to graduate education at CIC universities. The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue graduate study and research careers. SROP helps prepare undergraduates for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities.

Upward Bound-Math and Sciences
EMS Specific –SEEMS –Summer Experience in Earth and Mineral Sciences
The purpose of the Upward Bound Math and Science Center (UBMS) at Penn State is to assist participating students in recognizing and developing their potential to excel in math or science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these fields. Penn State UBMS serves eligible students from Harrisburg, Reading and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and in six target high schools located in urban school districts in the state.

Weather or Not
Weather or Not is a fun and educational weather television show created and produced by students in the Meteorology Department at The Pennsylvania State University. The show reviews the latest in weather-related news, provides the weekend forecast, answers common meteorological questions, and explores how weather ties into everyday life. A new fifteen-minute show airs on Centre County’s C-Net, Channel 7, each week.

HOPES (Hurricane’s Outreach Program to Educate Scientists)
An outreach program for minority students in grades four through eight in the Philadelphia area to inspire and educate them about science, math, and meteorology in particular. In addition to other activities in the Philadelphia area and at the NBC studios, the program includes visits to Penn State Meteorology, AccuWeather, and the NWS in Mt. Holly, NJ. This program was brought to fruition and is lead by Penn state alumnus and well-known broadcast meteorologist, Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz.
Campus Weather Service
The Campus Weather Service is a completely student-run organization that provides forecasts free-of-charge over various media to the community. In addition to web-based forecasts, they currently provide forecasts to radio stations across central and northwest Pennsylvania, to the student newspaper, the Collegian, and their video team is active with C-NET. They also provide radio clients with fast severe weather alerts as they become available.
