Dr. James Adair's Latest Paper Targets Delivery and Near Infra-red Imagining of Cancer
Dr. James H. Adair, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering latest paper on targeted delivery and near infra-red imaging of cancer has been published on-line in ACS Nano. This paper is on imaging of breast and pancreatic cancer in an animal model. The content spans the physical chemistry to the near clinical. This work may lead the way to not only to earlier diagnosis, but quite possibly to targeted delivery of chemotherapeutics to such intractable cancers as those of the pancreas.

Materials Characterization Lab Gets State-of-the-Art Mass Spectrometer
A mass spectrometer that will help researchers interpret and understand the history of the Earth system will join other instruments in the Penn State's multi-user Materials Characterization Laboratory, thanks to a $724,000 grant through the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation Program.

William Ryan Named '2010 Partner of the Year' by EPA AIRNow Program.
Research Assistant in the Department of Meteorology, William F. Ryan, was recently named '2010 Partner of the Year' by the EPA for sharing his time, knowledge and enthusiasm about air quality forecasting throughout the life of the AIRNow program. The award was presented at the 2010 National Air Quality Conference in Raleigh, NC on 16 March.

Marcellus Shale Expert to Lecture at Penn State on March 28
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa -- Terry Engelder, professor of geosciences at Penn State and leading expert on the Marcellus shale, will present “A Brief History of the Marcellus Shale Gas: A 1940 Blowout, a 1959 Sputnik-era Science Fair, and the Jan. 17, 2008 Penn State Press Release,” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, in the auditorium at the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Science Teachers Join Penn State-Woods Hole Earthquake Team
As the massive earthquakes in Haiti and Chile show, the science of seismology has not advanced far enough for scientists to accurately predict earthquakes, but a new Penn State and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution project aims to add to the scientific understanding of earthquakes by involving secondary school science teachers in a national research effort to study earthquake swarms.

Tiny Shelled Creatures Shed Light on Extinction and Recovery 65 Million Years Ago
An astroid strike may not only account for the dimise of ocean and land life 65 million years ago, but the fireball's path and the resulting dust, darkeness and toxic metal contamination may explain the geographic unevenness of extinctions and recovery, according to Penn State geoscientists.

Hickner Receives PECASE Award

Conservation professionals, wildlife enthusiasts, forest managers, and government officials are invited to Penn State Law for "Fire in the Eastern United States," a symposium sponsored by the Penn State Environmental Law Review on April 1, 2010. Panelists inlcude Erica Smithwick, assistant professor of geography and director of Landscape Ecology, who studies ecosystem-wide impacts of forest fire and other disturbances.

Beyond the Edge of the Sea: Diversity of Life in the Deep-Ocean Wilderness, funded by the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) and National Science Foundation (NSF), explores and investigates hydrothermal vents on the bottom of the ocean, at times many miles down.

Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum and Art Gallery Accepted Into Museum Assessment Program (MAP)
The Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum & Art Gallery has been accepted into the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) for a 2010 Institutional Assessment by the American Association of Museums (AAM). Acceptance into MAP is acknowledgment by AAM of the EMS Museum's continued work towards recognition as an institution which employs standards and best practices of the museum field to its entire operation. The Institutional Assessment is a step toward AAM Accreditation for the EMS Museum.

The Earth and Mineral Sciences Library Spring 2010 Film Series kicks off on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, with a documentary on geologic changes in the Great Lakes. All films are screened at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesdays in room 105 Deike Building. The films feature a diverse mix of topics related to Earth and the environment.

Recently, the Penn State associate professor in geosciences was named a Humboldtian - recipient of a 2009 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Homboldt Foundation.
