Richard B. Alley, professor of geosciences, and Kenneth
M. Weiss , distinguished professor of anthropology,
have been named Evan Pugh Professors, the highest distinction

Peuquet Receives Guggenheim Fellowship
Donna J. Peuquet, professor of geography, has won a
John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for 2000. She is one
of only two Penn State professors, and nationally one
of two geographers, to receive one of these prestigious

Special Journal Issue Honors Frank Aplan
Frank F. Aplan, distinguished professor emeritus of
metallurgy and mineral processing, has been honored
by his colleagues with a special issue of the International
Journal of Mineral Processing. The symposium and technical
papers, published in honor of his 75th birthday, was
organized and edited by Penn State Professors S. Chander
and R. Hogg and University of California, Berkeley,

Ethics in Academia
Dr. E. Willard Miller is co-editor of a new book, Ethics
in Academia, that is based on the description of ethics
in the New International Dictionary as "the system or
code of morals of a particular profession." [MORE]

Gregory Jenkins, assistant professor of meteorology,
received a Faculty/Staff Diversity Recognition Award
from Penn State's Multicultural Resource Center (MRC)

Penn State Students Place First in Environmental
Design Contest
Each year the Waste-Management Environmental Research
Council (WERC) hosts an Environmental Design Contest
that provides students with practical, hands-on experience
designing solutions to actual environmental problems.
A team of seven Penn State students entered WERCıs 10th
annual design competition and took first place in the
Acid Mine Drainage Treatment and Utilization Task. [MORE]

Ian Harrison to Receive Award for Polymer Characterization
Research
Ian R. Harrison, professor of polymer science in Penn
State's Department of Materials Science and Engineering,
will be a co-recipient of a 2000 Outstanding Achievement
Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) this

Lakshman S. Yapa, associate professor of geography in
the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, has been
named the recipient of the 2000 Award for Faculty Outreach.

Roger M. Downs, professor and head of the geography
department, has been selected as a 2000 recipient of
the Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching.

The new Earth and Engineering Sciences Building is home
to two EMS units. They will occupy approximately forty
percent of the building, with the College of Engineering

1, 2000 Rocket Engine Design Leader to Receive McFarland
Award
Penn State alumnus and industry leader in rocket engine
design John A. Halchak will receive the 2000 David Ford
McFarland Award for Achievement in Metallurgy when the
52nd annual lecture and banquet coinciding with the
award are held on Saturday, April 15, on the University

"Girls Rock!" says EMS director of Diversity Enhancement
Programs, Cyndi Freeman Fail. "They just need to be
nurtured, engaged and motivated by women who have careers

Peter R. Gould, 67, Evan Pugh professor at Penn State,
died Jan. 22, 2000, at Centre Community Hospital after
a year-long battle with cancer. [MORE]

State
The National Science Foundation's Industry-University
Center for Glass Research (CGR) has formally established
the Center for Glass Surfaces and Interfaces at Penn
State. Carlo Pantano, professor of materials science
and engineering and director of Penn State's Materials
Research Institute, will direct the new research site.
