Mill District Acquired before March 1937.

J. Cosgrove Kilroy was born in Pittsburgh in 1890. He studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. His painting Mill District presents a view through the narrow cobblestone street of a neighborhood living in the shadow of a Pittsburgh steel mill. With a palette dominated by brick red, blue and black, the artist captures a gloomy, sunless atmosphere, whose only light seems to come from the bright flames emanating from the mill in the background. Prominently placed to the left side of the canvas stands an old brick house, a relic of the nineteenth century that looks to have had better days. Next to it stands the twisted form of a lifeless tree. A few figures stand in the street, the only sign of life in this desolate urban landscape.
