  • Several Penn State academic units will benefit as the result of a gift from the future estate of Penn State alumni Frank J. and Janet Glasgow Dudek.  The couple has committed approximately $2.5 million to create endowments in support of scholarships and fellowships, graduate and faculty research, and laboratory enhancements in the College of Agricultural Sciences, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the Eberly College of Science, and the Institute of Energy and the Environment.  <<MORE>>

  • Tim Bralower has been a key member of the leadership team in EMS since his arrival on campus.  After eight years of unsurpassed excellence, he has announced his intention to step down as Head of Geosciences, effective June 30, 2011.  He will rejoin the faculty as Professor of Geosciences.
    Tim has led Geosciences through a period of extraordinary development. The Department now boasts one of the youngest, most dynamic, and most diverse geosciences faculties in America.  Under his leadership the Department fared well in the recent NRC rankings--Penn State Geosciences clearly is among the best of the best programs nationally.   • Nittany Lion Club members and 2010 season football tickets holders will be able to purchase tickets online for Penn State's bowl game beginning at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 5. The Nittany Lions' bowl destination and opponent will be announced by 8:45 p.m. on Sunday. <more>

  • Cathy Lyons, EMS Associate Dean for Educational Equity, has announced her retirement from Penn State on December 31, 2010.  Cathy has provided outstanding service and leadership to EMS for the past three years.  Under her direction, EMS has reached a number of milestones in promoting diversity and equity in the College.  We now have signature partnerships with prominent HBCUs, vibrant summer experiences for students from protected classes, and most importantly, a positive culture of comitment to the principles of educationl equity among EMS student, faculty, and staff--all of this because of Cathy's tireless and selfless compassion and devotion to excellence. <<More>>

  • Deike Building Plaza Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
    The Deike Building Plaza Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on Friday, October 8, 2010 from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.  John A. Dutton, Emeritus Dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences welcomed everyone to the ceremony.  President Spanier delivered the opening address followed by the ribbon cutting and remarks from Helen Lee Henderson, granddaughter of the late George H.   • Tim Hatlee receives Dennis and Joan Thomson Distinguished Graduate Fellowship in Meteorology
    Tim Hatlee enters the graduate program in the Department of Meteorology with a great honor—he has been awarded the Dennis and Joan Thomson Distinguished Graduate Fellowship in Meteorology for 2010-2011.  The fellowship was established by Drs. Dennis and Joan Thomson in 2008 as a means to attract high caliber students to the Meteorology graduate program who have the potential to make unique contributions to the atmospheric sciences.

  • MatSE Receives $1 Million to Endow McFarlane Professorship and Scholarship Fund
    This past spring, Cathleen McFarlane-Ross, longtime friend of Penn State passed away.  Before her death she pledged $1 million to establish two endowments to benefit students and faculty of the Materials Science and Engineering Department in the University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

  • Donohue's Establish Trustee's Scholarship in EMS
    Energy entrepreneur Dr. David A. T. Donohue and his wife, Pamela, recently committed $100,000 to establish the "David and Pamela Donohue Trustee Scholarship" in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) at Penn State.

  • Leones Endow Energy and Mineral Engineering with $5 Million Gift
    John and Willie Leone have committed a leadership gift of $5 million to endow the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering in Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.  The University will name the department in recognition of the couple's generosity.

  • Landis Gift Names Broadcast Room in Myers Weather Center
    Friday, January 22, 2010 - University Park, PA - Robert C. Landis ('63 B.S., Meteorology) and his wife, Charlotte, recently committed $21,000 to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State.  The gift will support the Joel N. Myers Weather Center in the Department of Meteorology.
