STEWARDSHIP:
The process whereby an institution cares for and protects its philanthropic support - its gifts and those who give them - in a way that responds to the donor's expectations and respects the act of giving.

The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Stewardship Initiative

The mission of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Stewardship Initiative is to facilitate the institutionalization of stewardship within the College by providing the infrastructure needed to effectively manage and steward the College's philanthropic success.

Our goal is to respond to a donor's generosity in two ways - first, that we use their money wisely in the manner in which they intended, and second, that we make sure that they know how much we appreciate their gift. Afterall, the best prospects for future gifts are from the donors who have already given gifts to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The number, frequency and value of future gifts will be dependent on the initial and continuing care we provide to them and their gifts. Good stewardship is the key to future giving.

Why the Stewardship Initiative?

Our incredible philanthropic success during the Grand Destiny Campaign from 1996 to 2003 has provided the College with wonderful opportunities for growth. In 1995, EMS had 54 endowments and 82 members of the Obelisk Society, the College's leadership gift organization. Through the generosity of our donors, currently there are 215 endowment commitments and 191 members of the Obelisk Society. During the Grand Destiny Campaign, which ended June 30, 2003, EMS received gifts and pledges in excess of $59.3 million. The College has raised more than $82 million in the past ten years.

While the College has traditionally done an excellent job keeping our donors informed of the impact of their generosity, the success of the Grand Destiny Campaign requires us to assess our current practices so we can continue to provide our donors with the attention and information they deserve. Our goal is to provide the resources and support to College faculty and staff which will allow them to continue to show our stakeholders that "EMS Appreciates and Cares."
