Outstanding Staff Award

Guidlines

Eligibility Statement:

Oustanding staff awards are given to staff members in the areas of instructinal, administrative, and research support who show exemplary performance at their job, seek growth as professionals, and carry out the duties of the job enthusiastically and with integrity and dedication. Both on and off campus, the candidates favorably represent their department, the College and the University. Further, outstanding staff members foster an atmosphere of cooperation and creativity, contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of their peers. For those staff members in supervisory positions, superior leadership skills, such as skillful motivation, planning, and organization are also considered.

Nomination Procedure:

Nominations are open to all staff and faculty. A nomination form with an explanatory cover letter (attached) will be mailed to all EMS employees on September 1 and a reminder will be published in the fall issue of Down To Earth – depending on the timing of publication.

Deadline for submissions is October 1.

The completed form should be addressed to “The Nomination Committee, 116 Deike” for easy recognition. As nominations are received, they will be dated and logged for future reference. The nomination form will have a cover page with identifying information on it. To insure confidentiality and avoid and bias during evaluation, the cover sheet will not be given to the award committee.

An anonymous SAC member will be asked to give each nomination a number and photocopy only the supporting statements for the committee's review. In the event that several nominations are received for a single person, all supporting statements should be attached together and treated as one nomination. Where employees are nominated in more than one support area, the anonymous SAC member will ascertain the most appropriate category and group it accordingly. The award committee will then evaluate the anonymous nomination statements and choose the best nominations from each category based on the scores from the rating form (attached). The anonymous SAC member will be informed of the numbers of the finalists and will generate a memo, under the Dean's name, to be hand delivered to their supervisors/department heads asking for supporting material (memo attached).

The supervisors' comments must be returned to the nominating committee no later than November 1. If supporting material is not received, the candidate will be disqualified for the award. All nominations and supporting materials, along with the award committee's recommendations, will then be given to Dean Dutton. It will be his decision as to who will receive an award. He will choose one winner and tow honorable mentions for each of the three support areas.

Policies:

A person may only win the top award or honorable mention, in any given category once every five years. Previous honorable mention recipients continue to be eligible for the top award if nominated. A staff member is eligible to receive the award in another category upon promotion or position change. Regardless of eligibility, any nomination of a previous awardee will be accepted and acknowledged with a letter form the Dean.

For sorting and tracking purposes, an Awards Database will be maintained in the Dean's office listing previous award winners (Outstanding Staff Members and Honorable Mentions, Length of Service Awards, On the Job 100% Awards, etc.), along with the award dates.

The Award:

The awards will be presented at the Dean's Staff Appreciation Luncheon in December of each year. The awardees will be kept confidential until the moment of the award presentation.

Top award winners in each category will receive a plaque. Honorable mentions will receive a certificate. Both top award winners and honorable mentions will receive a monetary sum, to be determined by the
Dean. Each nominee will receive a letter from the Dean in recognition of their valued presence in our College after the awards presentation.
