Executive Council Meeting
Wednesday, July 20, 2005
116 Deike Building
1:00 p.m.

MINUTES

The Executive Council met on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 in 116 Deike Building at 1:00 p.m. Members in attendance were: Larry Achterberg, Michael Adewumi, Eric Barron, Tim Bralower, Sue Brantley, Cindy Brewer, Bill Brune, Dave DiBiase, Roger Downs, Cyndi Freeman-Fail, Kelly Henry, Gary Messing, Kevin Peterson, Alan Scaroni, Harold Schobert and Yaw Yeboah

Dean Barron distributed the following documents to the Executive Council:

1)  President Spanier forwarded a letter received by W. Terrell Jones, Vice Provost for Educational Equality, and Vicky L. Triponey, Vice
President of Student Affairs to the Academic Leadership Council stating that he has been seeing an upsurge in communications from
parents on whether their children were being indoctrinated by faculty.

2)  A memo from Rod Erickson regarding the operational aspects of the E-Learning @ PSU Cooperative and its relationship to the World
     Campus.

Review of the EMS Undergraduate Folder

The Executive Council reviewed and discussed the EMS Undergraduate Folder that was developed by University Publications to hold a one-page fact sheet on each of the undergraduate degree programs offered in EMS. Comments and concerns to date included that a more balanced set of images and keywords are needed to better reflect the disciplines in EMS. The outcome of the discussion was that the layout of the folder was generally great, however each department/unit was asked to forward the following information to Kelly Henry by Friday, August 12, 2005:

  • general comments on the container piece for consideration
  • three pictures that represent the degree programs in their unit
  • five keywords that represent the degree programs in their unit

The EMS Undergraduate Folder will be reconstructed from the information received and distributed again for review.

Review of the New EMS Web Site

The College is in the midst of completely revamping the web site. Dean Barron requested the following revision to the current site:

  • Create a new site that is friendly and is targeted towards a variety of audiences. Our current site is largely centered on students.
  • Highlight and provide quick access to departments and institutes.
  • Get to valuable information quickly

The University, through Policy AD54, has required that the following web page design changes be made by August 15, 2005:

1)  The Penn State Mark placement is to be in the top left corner of the content area in all cases. No content is permitted to the left or above
the mark. The mark must link to www.psu.edu.

2)  A standard search element must be placed anywhere within the top 25% of the content area and must be available on all pages.

3)  The site must have a faculty/staff directory. The unit administrator must be identified and contact information must be clear and in a usable
     contact format.

4)  Site must have a manager/editor contact method for problem-solving and user feedback.

5)  Site must link to Penn State policies for Equal Opportunity and nondiscrimination, privacy, site contact, copyright information, etc.

The following changes were recommended by the Executive Council:

  • Change the background to a lighter blue.
  • Change the page format from left justified to center.
  • List only the departments and units and make the “Centers” tab a link to a list of all the centers in EMS.
  • The “More News” tab should go directly to the current issue of Dean Files.
  • Delete the word “The” from the College word mark.
  • Delete the words “Associate Dean for” from Undergraduate Education and Graduate Education and Research.
  • Reduce the variety of fonts used.
  • More space is needed between the photo on the front page and the text.

The new site can be viewed at http://www.ems.psu.edu/test. Additional comments and concerns can be submitted to Kelly Henry at koh1@psu.edu. Kelly will be contacting the EMS administrative areas to assist in converting their site to the new format.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Kelly O. Henry
