Diversity Enhancement Initiatives
The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences is dedicated to the development and dissemination of knowledge about the environment, materials and energy of the Earth we share. The College is committed to assisting students in their quest for knowledge for their enrichment both academic and professional. EMS has a history of collaboration with business, industry and the government, which have been and will continue to be beneficial of all involved. The imperative for awareness and understanding of an increasingly multicultural workplaces and classrooms is a defined strategy for the continuing excellence of an EMS education.
" Working within and managing diverse teams demands discipline based skills plus effective cross-cultural communications skills."
The Earth we share is a diverse ecosystem; the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences reflects this rich palate in academic disciplines and strives for reflection in student, faculty and staff representation. The Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs is a product of the College's recognition and Dean Dutton's vision that the excellence of an education is dependent upon a diverse community of learners who provide a plethora of perspectives.
In an effort to continue to evolve and expand its role to meet the changing needs of the state, the nation and international community and industry as well as meet the constant need of our students to be citizens, scholars and graduates, EMS is supportive of the efforts of the Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs.
" An EMS education is an inside and outside the classroom process
made up of experiences which are academic enhanced, intellectually challenging
and experientially based which have life-long application."
"Penn State is many communities tied together in one university."
Mission
The mission of the Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs (DEP) is to develop and support a broader student population in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) with providing service to all students of the college. DEP's efforts benefit not only the under-represented students in the College -- people of color, women, persons with disabilities, lesbian, gay and bisexual students and adult learners, but all students of the college by providing a more diverse classroom experience. Business and scientific worlds have become increasingly diverse and more inclusive, as has the College. A diverse classroom experience provides our students and faculty with a variety of perspectives, which lead to increased learning for all. DEP has a commitment to providing a positive, supportive environment within the College for all students.
