The United States of America prides itself on its democratic government. Yet sometimes it as seen as the big brother watching over smaller local governments and keeping the upper hand. There are people that argue for national control while others argue that decisions should be made at the local level with the national government as additional support.
In Arizona, where there is a decision being made on whether or not wolves should be reintroduced in Catron County. Al Schneeberger, New Mexico Cattle Growers Association, has strong feelings about the reintroduction as well as other ranchers from Catron County. However, Catron County isn't making the decision about the reintroduction of these grey wolves.
The question is who should make the decision and based on what? At present time the federal government has that control. Beyond the case in Arizona, there are other cases that see a contradiction between local government and "big brother." In Centre County, PA there is a current push to rebuild Route 220. The state feels to improve logistics and allow for better travel, the road should be expanded. Their priority is the tourist, the person passing through. Yet, local people will lose homes and farms if the current plan is initiated. People like Bob Foster, who has lived in Centre County all of his life will lose his farm. The new Route 220 could also have detrimental effects on the wildlife population (deer), not to mention noise pollution. Who should make this decision? Should the local government and population have some say in what is done?
