The graduate students in the department are taught by a dedicated materials science and engineering faculty. Many graduate students have faculty research advisors from other departments at Penn State. Graduate students have daily contact and dialogue with these faculty members who teach them in small classes and research groups. The faculty are nationally and internationally known for their research, publications, activities in government committees and commissions, and in professional organizations where they hold high office. Furthermore, the materials science and engineering faculty have strong inter-college and inter-department associations throughout the University.

All of the departmental administrative offices are located in Steidle Building. The faculty offices, laboratory facilities, and research equipment are located in Steidle Building and the adjoining Hosler Building, the MRI Building at the Penn State Innovation Park, the MRL Building, and the Applied Research Laboratory.
