Due on Monday, February 25

1) Identify two minerals in each of the following mineral categories from the displays at the EMS museum or at the entrance floor of the Hosler Building between rooms 117 and 118.

1) native elements

2) sulfides

3) halides

4) oxides and hydroxides

5) carbonates, nitrates, and borates

6) sulfates

7) phosphates

8) silicates

 Use the following web site  http://www.man.ac.uk/Geology/MineralWeb/Mineral_Web.html  as well as your textbook and lecture notes to provide information on the classification, crystal structure, properties, and uses of the minerals you have selected. You need to use Netscape and have Chime plug-in to view the crystal structures at this site (60 pts).

2) Describe and discuss one of the displays that demonstrate physical properties of selected minerals (20 pts).

3) Visit Luminescent and Fluorescent Minerals exhibits at the EMS museum and identify and describe one fluorescent and one phosphorescent mineral present in the displays.  Explain, in simple terms, what causes fluorescence and phosporescence (20 pts).
