Petroplan Project

You are asked to construct a refinery using Petroplan that contains five specified processes given in your assigned configuration (all configurations must include a distillation unit). Along with the configuration you will be assigned two crude oils to observe how crude composition affects the performance of your refinery. In addition to your simple refinery simulation, your team needs to construct a more complex refinery by adding other units to your configuration. You should use your knowledge of refinery processes to add new units to improve the yield and quality of valuable products from your plant. Also, please feel free to alter any relevant parameters within the Petroplan model to improve performance.

You report should include the following:

• A summary of your results.
• A description of your complex refinery.
• An image of your refinery layout with all streams labeled.
• Relevant material balances for determining product yields.
• If any auxiliary units were added or parameters were altered, include a statement telling why and what impact they had on refinery operation.

Your grade for this project will depend on effort, creativity, critical thinking, and clarity of your report. The objective of this assignment is not to simply have you connect lines to boxes to generate large sets of numbers, but to deepen your understanding of how a refinery works and introduce you to the types of problems refiners are faced with when making decisions.
